7 Things I Would Like to Say to Professors in Teacher Prep Programs

7. Do you use a lesson plan for every class…including the days you are teaching about lesson plans?

6. You have a picture on your desk of an apple with a friendly green worm coming out smiling. Isn’t it kind of gross for a worm to be in an apple?

5. If you really want to stay abreast of the latest breakthroughs in pedagogy, read fewer journals and visit more classrooms.

Amen! It is amazing how much has to be learned on the job after graduating. I wonder, too, why there are no subject specific courses in educator prep programs. Teachers take science courses and education courses, but none where they learn how to structure an inquiry science lab, what to think about in terms of lab safety, etc.

And the next teacher candidate to look at a student and say “they must be a kinesthetic learner” needs to be slapped. They’re all kinesthetic learners…and all auditory and visual too. They need all the forms.
